Fourth District, Mass.—On Monday last, another trial was had in Palfrey's District to elect a member of Congress. Returns from all but two towns give the following result:

Thompson, whig, 4413
Palfrey, Van Buren, 3888
Robinson, Cassite, 1790

This result exhibits a net Whig gain since the last trial, of 1478 votes. It is said that Gen. Taylor's conduct, touching the subject of slavery, has had the effect to bring back many Whigs who had been deluded by the unfounded stories retailed so freely about his opinions upon this subject.
