LETTER FROM MRS. WITTENMYER:

LIST OF IOWA SOLDIERS IN HOSPITALS AT LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.

Louisville, Dec. 10, 1863.

EDITOR GATE CITY:-Enclosed you will find a list of all the sick and wounded Iowa soldiers in the Hospitals here, as furnished by the Medical Directory.

There are twenty-seven hospitals here -as far as I can learn, in pretty good condition. I go on to Nashville to-morrow; most of our sick and wounded are there and at Chattanooga. The railroad is in good running order from this point to Nashville, and some distance beyond. A heavy force is at work on the railway leading from Corinth via Nashville, to Chattanooga, and it will doubtless be in good running condition in two or three weeks.

There are some persons here trying to get through the lines to visit their sick and wounded friends-many of them are turned back.

While the train was running at full speed yesterday on the Ohio and Mississippi railroad, a rail gave way, which resulted in throwing the ladies'car off the track and breaking it to pieces. The car was full of passengers at the time, but fortunately no one was seriously injured. I was sitting near the stove reading, at the time of the accident-when it was over I found myself, the stove, water tank, broken seats and some of my fellow-passengers, in a heap in one corner. I came off. however, without a wound or a bruise. I never heard more hearty and earnest thanksgiving to God, than from those grateful passengers when they realized how complete had been our deliverance.

ANNIE WITTENMYER.
