WOMEN IN ARSENAL
For First Time Now American Women Start Work in Rock Island Plant,

Rock Island, May 13.--Employment of women in the workshop of United States arsenal was begun this morning at the Rock Island arsenal following an appeal by Col. L. T. Hillman, commandant, telling of the need of women workers if the speed schedule of the war department was to be maintained. In his statement Colonel Hillman said:

"The first step would be in the sewing room, where women are to be used in operating power sewing machines on cloth and canvas army equipment."

According to the commandant, it is expected that at least a hundred women workers will be working in the arsenal shops by the end of the present week.
