Reports from Paris on January 13-14 detail delays in the French Brest fleet's departure, potentially allowing Admiral Rodney to relieve Gibraltar despite Spanish efforts under Don Cordova. We have not yet received any accounts of the departure of the Brest fleet. If, as it is said, Don Gastón has no other object in view than to hinder the English from succouring Gibraltar, it is astonishing he should not sail till 10 or 12 days after the sailing of the English squadron; and if the Brest fleet should delay sailing but a short time longer, it is to be feared Admiral Rodney will have time to throw succour into Gibraltar, in spite of the Spanish fleet under Don Cordova.
Orders were immediately sent to Brest for a squadron to sail against the English Admirals Rodney, Digby, and Ross.
Jan. 14.
As soon as we received accounts of the fleet immediately from thence; but it was not sailed on the 5th, though they were positively to go on the next day, or by the 10th at latest. They are to take in provisions for four months.
