DUANE'S
SUBSCRIBERS.
DUANE, in the Aurora of the 19th has published a lengthy address to his subscribers, which deserves attention for no other reason but to exemplify the inconsistency, the falsehood, and the impudence of the organ of Pennsylvania. Duane in a former paper told the public he had four thousand subscribers; he now tells them that only a few more than forty have come forward to pay their subscriptions in the close of the year. Estimating the annual Subscription of each of those four thousand at six dollars, which is less than a medium between the city and country paper, the amount due to Duane after deducting fifty subscriptions, ought to be twenty-three thousand seven hundred dollars. But Duane tells us in this address, that the subscription due to him, only amounts to seven thousand. Wherefore it is evident that Duane has wished to impress the public with a belief, that his subscription revenue was sixteen thousand seven hundred dollars more than it actually is. If Duane's last statement is correct, which probably it is, the number of his subscribers cannot exceed twelve hundred and seventeen. How stupid must the organ of the public will be, not to have foreseen the inextricable position which he has assumed. This address of Duane's furnishes us
Also with a most conclusive and decided proof of the meanness of many of the supporters of the Aurora. Duane, by declaring that only a few more than forty have come forward to pay their subscriptions, has told us in plain terms, that only a few more than forty among his subscribers can be honest men: for no man but a knave or a fool would subscribe for a paper without paying for it. What a melancholy proof of the principles of those citizens who at present form the ruling party in America!!
