LEGISLATURE OF MASSACHUSETTS.
Agreeably to the provisions of the Constitution, the members elected to form the Legislature of the State, for the current political year, met at the State House, yesterday forenoon, and proceeded to the due and regular organization of the several branches.
In the House of Representatives, the whole number of votes for Clerk, was found to be 423, of which Benjamin Pollard, Esq. had 321, and was accordingly chosen. C. P. Sumner, Esq. had 97 votes, and Benjamin Green, Esq. 5.--For Speaker, the whole number was 422, of which the Hon. Timothy Bigelow had 316, and was declared chosen. The Hon. Benjamin Green, of Berwick was the opposing candidate for Speaker.
In the Senate, on the choice of a President, the whole number of votes was 25, of which the Hon. John Phillips had 23, and accordingly took the chair: For Clerk, the whole number of votes was 28, all of which were given for Samuel F. M'Cleary, Esq. Absent from the Senate, Messrs. Blake, Gage, Moody, Mills, Folger, jr. Hubbell and Parker.
The two Houses being formed, the usual Committees were appointed and the Governor and Council were informed of their readiness to attend public worship. A procession was soon after formed, under the escort of the Independent Cadets, commanded by Col. George G. Lee, and moved to the Old South Meeting House, where an appropriate and very candid judicious discourse was pronounced by the Rev. Jesse Appleton, D. D. President of Bowdoin College, before the several branches of the Legislature, and a large and highly respectable concourse of spectators. On the return of the procession, to the State House, the two branches adjourned to meet again this morning at 10 o'clock. Mr. Appleton's text was from Isaiah, xxxiii. 6.
The Washington Artillery Company, under the command of Capt. Thaxter, fired the salutes of the day.
