By a Gentleman who arrived last Week in a Flag of Truce
from Newport we learn, that the Enemy's Force at Rhode-Island.
was then as follows, viz. about 4000 British and Hessian Troops,
under the Generals Percy, Prescott, Smith, &c. ; 2 Ships
of 50 Guns, 4 Frigates, 1 Sloop of 38 guns, 1 large Galley, and
two small ones, the former mounting 14 guns, 18 Pounders in
her Bow. He further informs, that a large Fleet was to sail from
Portsmouth for America the 12th of March last, with 2 Regi-
ments of Hanover, 2 of Hessians, 1 of Brunswick Worlsterbottle.
1 of Light Horse, and British Recruits sufficient to make in the
Whole 5000 Men; that they are chiefly new undiciplined
Troops, and that it was said Clinton was to Command them.
On Monday last General Percy, the Hero of Lexington (great
General of the American War, though covered with Laurels) sailed from
Newport for England in a Ship mounting fourteen Guns only.
The Command has devolved on General Pigott.
On Tuesday Night three Persons escaped from Rhode Island
to the Main, and are since arrived here. They inform, that the
Enemy are wooding and watering their Vessels; that fresh Pro-
visions is very scarce, and that a considerable Number of Houses
have been pulled down, to supply the Want of Fuel.
We learn that two sloops were taken a few days since in the
Eastern Sound, and carried into a safe harbour in Connecticut;
they were bound from New-York to Newport, laden with Flour.

also (which will be judged more valuable) a large sum of mo-
ey said to be about 20,000 dollars.
