Clark College's Red and Black Panthers of the basketball court are prepping for the invasion of the famed and colorful cagers of Tuskegee Institute, known better as the Golden Tigers. The Alabama combine will face the undefeated Panthers here on the Sunset Casino on Wednesday night (tomorrow) in one of the most important clashes of the year, since both clubs are aiming at the Southern Conference cage championship.
The men of Coach Charles McPherson, riding high with six straight wins and no losses to date, will enter the fray as favorites, while the Clark College girls, billed in the opening game of the night with the Tuskegee Tigerettes, will enter the melee as underdogs to the usual fast Alabama girl's club. This preliminary, but important game, is slated to start at 7 o'clock, and the fans who are expected to number far into the hundreds are asked to get into their choice seats on time.
McPHERSON DOUBTFUL
Coach McPherson of Clark is unlike his players, who feel that they will lick the Tigers decisively. He is of the opinion and expressed it yesterday that the Tigers will emerge winners again over his lads, who have not beaten Tuskegee the past four years in basketball. The players believe that this is their year to beat back the Alabamians and will go out on the floor tomorrow night to do that by a wide margin. They feel that this is their year and have begun already to talk about a national cage title, after they have won the Southern Loop title in the tournament late this season on Logan gym in Tuskegee.
Chief among those Clark stars who will be out to avenge several Clark defeats suffered at the hands of the Tigers in years past will be Reginald Haynes, who has never played on a team that has beaten the Tigers in basketball. "Although the coach is pessimistic about us winning over the Tigers tomorrow night, we are not and will win for a grand Atlanta crowd." Haynes said Monday on being questioned about the chances the Panthers had of winning the fray.
Haynes believes that the lanky Roseborough, who has been scoring from 20 to 25 points in each game so far this season can and will be stopped much in conflict with what Coach McPherson thinks.
BOTH TEAMS IN SHAPE
Both teams will enter the game in tip top form since the return to the floor of Raymond Williams and Talmadge Owens, two of the Panther dependable sharp shooters.
Williams was out of the Clark Fort McClellan game here Saturday afternoon which Clark took only after a hard struggle 38 to 36. Owens got into the mixup and Clark may not have won had it not been for his brilliant shooting despite his being slightly ill. He is, like Williams, in fine fettle and will start the game tomorrow night along with Haynes, Colquitt and Judo Brown, all vets of other seasons.
Clark's girls have been defeated this season but as usual they will be out there putting up their fine play against the classy Tuskegee Tigerettes, who will have several vets from last season to place in the starting lineup. Basketball fans of the city may look forward to a great doublebill with the coming of the popular Tuskegee teams to Atlanta tomorrow night.
