Full Text
A Burly Beggar.-An Italian, named Lorenzo Petro, a professional beggar, who has reduced the thing to a science, and works upon the sympathies of the unsophisticated by laying pretensions to a rupture, a broken back, and sundry other little physical adornments, snagged himself against the "Vagrant Act" on Tuesday last. A medical man pronounced the Gloster hump on his back, nothing but a pack saddle, well padded, and in like manner, one by one, stripped the poor soul of his several infirmities, leaving him entirely destitute of the means of a livelihood; not even his valuable rupture availed him. Judge Thompson kindly provided him a home in the county jail for thirty days, where he will have an opportunity of meditating in retirement upon a plan for the restoration of his squandered estate. -Calaveras Chronicle
