Full Text

Col. Joseph M. Day, who superintended the work of recruiting in the rebel states for this state, has finished up his accounts and been relieved from duty. The amount deposited with the treasurer for procuring recruits was $680,262, of which $78,000 were deposited by individuals. Nearly one-sixth of the whole sum was to the credit of Boston, and 482 men were furnished towards her quota. Worcester received 66 men, and Springfield 60. The board enlisted 2418 colored men, all but 16 of whom were three years men and claimed no bounty. They have in nearly every instance proved themselves faithful soldiers—only four having been known to desert. They have been furnished at about half the cost of other recruits during the same time, making an aggregate saving of at least half a million of dollars to the citizens of the state. Of the amount deposited with the treasurer $50,000 have been returned to the various towns, and more than $10,000, at Gov. Andrew's suggestion and with the consent of individuals, saved from their deposits, have been placed in the hands of Surgeon General Dale for the relief of sick and disabled soldiers. The state has furnished, during the war, for the army and navy 157,893 men, and stands at the close $538 ahead of all calls.
