Justice of Peace Killed by Negro

Warrenton, Va., July 19.—Thomas Meredith, justice of the peace, was fatally shot after he had been knocked down by a negro, on whom he was serving a warrant at Gainesville, 12 miles from here, this afternoon. The negro fired five shots into the body of the prostrate magistrate, who died almost instantly. His assailant escaped, but his capture is said to be only a matter of a few hours. Meredith was a brother of the late Representative E. E. Meredith, who represented this district in congress for a number of years.
