Dinner to Mr. Rives.—The Lewisburg Alleghanyian of the 6th, received yesterday morning, contains the proceedings at the dinner recently given to our Senator, William C. Rives, Esq. in that place. We are compelled, by their length, to defer them until our next; but, in the mean time, we cannot delay calling public attention to the following incident: Mr. Trist, on rising to give a toast, remarked, in substance, that when Giles's infamous Bill," as the bill for the enforcement of the embargo was called, was the object of Essex Junto obloquy, and when the secession of the Eastern States was threatened, as the only refuge from the "Military Despotism" of Thomas Jefferson; at this crisis, the Electoral College of Virginia met in Richmond, and having given their vote for James Madison as President, the event was celebrated by a public dinner, at which, among other persons present, was Spencer Roane, the great advocate of State Rights—and at this dinner the following was one of the regular toasts, which are, of course, always prepared to speak the sentiments of the party, particularly on such great occasions and at such interesting times as those were: "The Union—The majority must govern— IT IS TREASON TO SECEDE." What think you, Mr. Pleasants, of such a sentiment as this, approved of by Spencer Roane? Lynchburg Virginian.
