Tells of Trip
John Springhill, local businessman, spoke to the Chamber members on his recent trip to Finland.
He flew aboard an SAS flight over the North Pole to his homeland.
Springhill stated it had been 43 years since he left Finland.
The main purpose of the trip was to visit his brother who had been ill for some time. He stated he found conditions in his homeland "most distressing." The communist influence is felt there, he said, mainly because of Russia's close proximity to Finland, and the latter's size.
He spent two weeks on the entire flight, also visiting Sweden, Norway and Denmark for brief stops.
Considerable anxiety was felt on the trip over, when one of the engines gave out. The plane was re-routed to Norway in the interest of safety.
