Bands Getting Good Breaks in Hollywood
BY RAY BUFORD
HOLLYWOOD, Cal.
Things seem to be picking up for bands and musicians in the film city. Jo Trent is reported to be getting an aggregation ready for a circuit tour. Earl Dancer is heard nightly over the Columbia Broadcasting Station locally and Les Hite has two half periods and there are many other soloists, choirs, quartets, and other orchestras heard occasionally. Hollywood ethers is surely charged with this type of music.
While on music—I have been told to watch some youngsters that is comparatively speaking—Jimmy Miller from Pasadena. Yes, he has been around but he can bear watching. Marion Hendricks, who chirps for Jo Trent and is supposed to be a whale of a find. The Four Trumpets, a miniature Mills Brothers, whose arrangement of "Echo in the Valley" is knocking them out in the aisles. Bob Tarrish, a voice vibrant with thrills and more about the radio found a program listed in a local paper. It read, "From 3-4: Duchin's band. Mildred Bailey's Blues and a colored church service. Boy that was some variety with emphasis on the latter two-thirds.
About Plays, Musicals and People
Hot Chocolates opened in Pasadena for a week's tryout and from reports will play for five weeks after a week's rehearsal. Cabin Echoes will go into the Hollywood Playhouse, so 'tis said. Yep that is the show whose doors did not open on the first night.
'Tis said that Stepin Fetchit and Louise Beavers will make a picture for Fox Studio which is being written for them by the story department. 'Tis also said that Etta Moten, Clarence Muse and Theresa Harris are in line for some good parts and they will be given them soon. It wasn't told to me I only heard.
Of the many that were needed under contract at MGM last year Nathan Curry, D. Fliz English and William Dunn. Curry has the best part of the four.
However, work seems to be picking up on the picture, Tarzan and His Mate, because 26 men were used Saturday and some mob scenes will be made this week. Rod La Rocque has been replaced by Phil Cagney in the cast.
