NEW YORK CITY - (ANP) - Leaders in community life, education and government took part in ceremonies Tuesday night marking the dedication of the $2.9 million Public School 197 at 5th ave. and 135th st.
The new school, a two-story structure with an enrollment capacity of 1,206 pupils in grades K-6, is part of a comprehensive plan by the Board of Education to rebuild and enlarge the physical school plant throughout the West Harlem area.
Five other elementary school buildings are presently under construction and two more are in the design stage, while a newly-converted high school building is being utilized for junior high school purposes.
Including Public School 197, this nine school program has accommodations for over 10,000 pupils and will cost more than $18 million, not including sites, furniture and equipment.
Public School 197, with its 29 regular classrooms, four kindergartens, two special rooms, auditorium, gymnasium, library and combination lunchroom-playroom, bears the name of John B. Russwurm, said to be the first member of the Negro race to be graduated from the American college, Bowdoin.
