ST. LOUIS, MO.-(SNS)-Satchel Paige will be honored at Sportsman's Park, Monday night for his all-around brilliance on the mound this season with the St. Louis Browns.
At the request of a large and representative group of Greater St. Louisians, president Bill Veeck of the Browns agreed to the group's plan of holding a Satchel Paige Night when the Washington Senators play a make-up game with the Browns. Originally July 28 was an off date, but the 18 inning 5-5 tie in which Paige pitched 10 scoreless innings has been rescheduled for that Monday night. Because Satchel pitched more than one complete game in an effort to defeat Washington that night, Veeck reasoned that it was just to let Leroy try to finally win the complete game. Manager Marty Marion heartily concurred and so Paige will make his first scheduled start on Monday night, July 28, against Washington, a team against which he has had distinguished success this season. The committee, which includes many prominent names in St. Louis, is headed by Peter Herzig and Dr. W. A. Younge. N. A. Sweets made the original proposal for a Satchel Paige Night.
The committee will make an appropriate presentation and gift in the ceremonies being planned, but emphasized that they would seek no public contributions for gifts to the fabulous and ageless righthander.
