The post office building was a surprise to be found in a city of probably 6,500.
The newspaper offices seem to be busy. A common complaint was, "It is hard to collect." Editors Miller, Stone, and Adams were very cordial and the foreman of the Register was in a pickle.
He noticed that some of the City and County boarders were decorated with quite a weighty "watch chain" when they were conveyed to their work in a carriage.
Another surprise was the large stock and store of Covington and Mitchell. The prices quoted on clothing etc. were as low as prices for same grade quoted in Chattanooga, Louisville, Nashville or Atlanta, two weeks ago.
The hat and shoe stock at Douglas Bros. is complete and well selected and the prices satisfactory. Those gentlemen have purchased a fine line for autumn and winter.
A visit to the dental parlors of Drs. Smith, Dr. Hobson, and Dr. Morgan revealed the fact that an immense advance and improvement in tooth treatment had been evolved since the old days of the wax thread to an anvil and the omnipotent "turnkey."
Lack of space at this time forbids mention of many other pleasing experiences and acquaintances formed.
