DEAR SIR,
"I FORGOT in my letter by Mr. to inform you, that our general assembly, in their last session, held at New-Haven, unanimously passed a law for granting and conferring the rights, privileges, and immunities of denizenship, unto the Right Honourable the Marquis de la Fayette, as well as unto his Son, the Honourable George Washington la Fayette.
"I glory that Connecticut has given, in this hemisphere, the first instance of a sovereign State presenting, unasked, its freedom, that is, the privileges of the citizen and of the freeholder, to a foreigner; but his zeal for our cause, his warm and glowing affection for the glory and prosperity of these states, and not less the love we particularly bear him, have long since naturalized among us, this worthy, this excellent Gallo-American, and made him our Brother and Friend.
I am, &c. J. W--th."
