Full Text

Extract of a letter from a Gentleman in Grenada, to his friend in this city, dated October 21, 1766.

"We have had this morning, at 5 o'clock, a severe shock of an earthquake, which lasted about 2 minutes. The houses shook so much that, if I had been in a brick or stone one, I should certainly have quitted it; however, it has done no damage that I have heard of. The morning was extremely clear and serene, without the least breath of air, perceptible at the time of the shock."

A later account from Grenada informs that several stone buildings, on plantations in the country, were shattered by the earthquake on the 21st of October. That on the 24th of that month, at night, two other smart shocks were felt there, without doing any hurt. That it was also felt in the islands of St Vincent and Curacao, at the very moment it happened there. And that at the island of Trinidad it was dreadful beyond description. It was reported that the face of the whole island was totally changed, whole mountains being levelled, and that the earth was so strongly agitated as to make it impossible for a person to stand.
