BREWERIES BUYING
POLL TAX RECEIPTS
Special to The Light.
Beaumont, Tex., Jan. 24.—A report
gained currency here that the breweries
and liquor interests had made up
a fund to buy poll tax receipts and
were securing receipts by sending
dummies to the collector's office.
Evidence of the deal became so
strong that yesterday a special grand
jury was convened and
secretly
charged, the body adjourning today
at noon.
Nine indictments were returned and
are in the hands of the sheriff.
It is expected arrests will be followed
by the exposure of the conspiracy
and conspirators.
The incident has caused intense excitement in certain circles.
