KEARSARGE A WRECK.

The Famous Old Steamship Struck on Roncador Reef.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 9.—The United States steamship Kearsarge was wrecked on Roncador reef Feb. 2. The officers and crew were saved. The news reached the navy department in a dispatch which came from Colon. It was sent by Lieutenant Brainard of the Kearsarge, who reached Colon Feb. 8. The Kearsarge sailed from Port au Prince, Hayti, for Bluefields, Nicaragua, to protect American interests there, in view of the invasion of the military forces of Honduras. She was wrecked three days out. Roncador reef is a little over 200 miles from the Mosquito coast of Central America. Before the coast and the reef lies Old Providence island, only 75 or 80 miles to leeward of the reef. It is believed at the navy department that the officers and crew would be able to reach Old Providence without difficulty in case they were in danger of their lives on the reef, and it is believed that they would be safe on the reef, except in the event of rough weather.

The Crew Rescued

COLON, Feb. 13.—The crew of the United States cruiser Kearsarge was rescued at noon on Saturday. One man was drowned. He was a second class fireman named Anderson Robbins. The old warship was abandoned on Roncador reef, with the Stars and Stripes still flying at her peak. The steamship City of Para, with the crew of the Kearsarge on board, will leave this port for New York on Wednesday next.
