SOILS TESTING IS PROVIDED FARMERS

Raleigh, June 5.—A free soils testing program for farmers, to provide information to be used in more intelligent selection of fertilizer grades, will be provided by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture within the next 90 days.

The program will be financed with increased revenue provided by the 1939 General Assembly.

A chemical process is used in soils testing work to determine the content of soils and the formation found by chemists may be used as a basis to determine the most suitable fertilizer, and remove the "guess work" in fertilizer grade buying.

D. S. Coltrane, assistant to the commissioner of agriculture, emphasized, however, that "at best, soil testing work is but an effort to give farmers additional information on the chemical analysis of his land and to help him to more scientifically determine the amounts of plant food necessary for maximum yields at minimum costs."

Meanwhile, the department is seeking a competent agronomist and soils chemist to head the new program.
