Full Text

A young Bedford (Va.) fellow lost his way in footing it over the Blue Ridge, and had a narrow escape from what might have been a living tomb. He climbed a large chestnut tree at night, as he was afraid to sleep on the ground, but in crawling into the hollow top, where it had been broken by the wind, the tree was proved to be a mere shell, and he fell forty feet into its depths. A small knot-hole supplied the prison with air, and, by picking at the wood with his fingers, the captive got a hole big enough to let him out just before dark the next night.
