The Rev. W. W. Sharp and His Family Were Pleasantly Received.
Special Correspondence of Gazette and Journal.
Tangier, Va., April 15.- The Rev. W. W. Sharp, the new pastor of Tangier M. E. Church, and his family arrived here April 4th, and were welcomed by many people, who had assembled at the parsonage to greet them. The women had prepared a fine dinner, including oysters, shad and chicken, which was greatly appreciated.
Tangier Church cost $20,000, and is an elegant building. It is heated by steam, and lighted by acetylene gas.
Mr. Sharp first officiated in the church April 6th. Seven hundred people attended the morning service, taxing the seating capacity to the utmost. The Sunday-school met in the afternoon, with 466 scholars present, and the collection amounted to $28. After Sunday-school there was a temperance meeting at which Mrs. Hoage, president of the Virginia W. C. T. U., made an address.
At the evening service the attendance was large, and after the sermon three penitents bowed at the altar, one of whom professed conversion.
Tangier Island is five miles long and three-fourths of a mile wide. The inhabitants, numbering 1,300, are engaged in oystering, fishing and crabbing. The oyster season is closing, and the crab season will begin next month.
Large shad can be bought here for 20 cents each.
A large garden adjoins the parsonage, and, notwithstanding he has been here less than two weeks, Mr. Sharp has his potatoes planted, onions and cabbage set out and celery seed sown.
