Full Text
Collection of Claims for Indiana Soldiers.
The Hon. O. P. Morton, Governor of Indiana, whose zeal for the welfare of his soldiers is proverbial, has again entered upon the initiative. Whilst in this city last week, he made arrangements for enlarging the work of his Military Agency in this city, by connecting with it the duty of prosecuting soldiers' claims at the expense of the State.
Blank forms for claims of every description are furnished from the office here and the department at Indianapolis, and when prepared are filed and prosecuted here by the agent.
Publication is to be made of this arrangement in the newspapers of the State, and a circular addressed to the regiments in the field on the subject. This arrangement will save to the brave men of the State and their friends, tens of thousands of dollars, and is certainly an act of justice.
We understand that the agent here is not to file applications for attorneys who receive a fee, and not to receive business from agents in any other State than his own who may send their claims to him to elude the eye of the duly appointed agent of that State, as has often been done.
If this arrangement were adopted by all the States, an immense saving to the soldiers would be the result.
