Northern YMCA's Norbert Schemansky succeeded in outlifting Big John Davis in York, Pennsylvania last week, in the clean and jerk lift. Schemansky total was 1,021 pounds, a new record.
Davis, two times Olympic champion, lost his first match. Jerome, brother of Norbert, took middleweight title, giving the family clean sweep of "clean jerk".
Competition for new addition to the Cleveland Indians baseball team promises to be keener than in many seasons, especially with a rejuvenated high command, plus the certainty that some of their top stars appear headed for the showers once and for all.
Several septet players will be among those seeking positions on the 1953 team. Among them are Ray Pope of Indianapolis who led the American Association with a batting average of .352 last season; Dave Hoskins formerly of the Grand Rapids Jets of the Central League (Michigan), but a most recent graduate of the Texas League where he won 22 and lost 10; Al Smith, also of Indianapolis Indians who played several positions last year including second base and the outfield; the hurler part of at least two seasons; Jose Santiago, hurler with Dallas of Texas League and probably a young hurler not yet named.
Roy Campanella appears to be the most underpaid player in baseball. 1953 contract for $25,000 identical with last year and $1,000 more than the year before, then he certainly was and yet is underpaid.
Chuck Davey, readying for title go with Kid Gavilan is training in sumptuous surroundings of George S. May's Tam O' Shanter in Chicago. Meanwhile, the "Kid" gets in warm-up this Wednesday in nationally televised fight.
Miller High Trojans, once Scourge of Metro cage loop are sharper than last season but still out of the top group—at this time. Coach Wil Robinson, like other coaches has not received the high calibre of talent to employ his brand of court game in the past two years.
Jim Lemon of the Indians has returned from service and is likely to give Luke Easter a run for first base job. . . Easter, however, stated several weeks ago: "I'll be in top shape for entire season as injury that plagued me most of the past two years has been eliminated."
Except for the Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Browns other American League teams have no Negro player. Would you guess that at least one other team in major loop will bring up one before the pennant is determined? Don't say we didn't give you a tip.
WALTER DUKES' Seton Hall continues to spark team to the top rank in collegiate basketball, dropped 31 points into net as Seton Hall defeated
Kentucky Victims After holding a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter the Kentucky State Thorobreds broke away in slow fashion, won to beat the Fisk University Bulldogs in a Ball Gymnasium. James "Lefty" Goss, freshman from Orlando, Florida, paced the floor throughout the initial half with his rebounding and ball-hawking. At the end of the first half, the State led 35-32.
Fordham 60-63 last week. Team at the writing remains only major undefeated college team in nation. Abe Saperstein undoubtedly has his eyes cast on the 6 foot 1 inch cage star. What do you say man he do max with the famous Globetrotters?
SUGAR RAY ROBINSON missed several star appearances upon being informed that his friend and former aide Fred (Pee Wee Barnes) died of heart attack.
Spring of Robinson being thought Randy Turpin dubbed the man not likely to succeed the 'Sugarman' as middleweight champion currently holds three Brit titles - welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight.
Norman Hayes, young New Englander, lost split decision to Bobo Olson recently and will try to ruin the tide in that rematch Feb. Both are aiming for middleweight throne vacated by Robinson.
Wrestling matches in Michigan must be billed as exhibitions. The Jim Londos affair last week according to those who attended indicated that it's just that - with excellent workouts for those fans who like to watch the grunt and groan game.
Both Wayne U and Lawrence Tech may go to at least one national invitation tournament before it's all over!
