Amish jailed.

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa—Eight men of the Amish denomination protesting state interference with operation of their private schools, went to jail here for three days rather than pay fines of $10 each.

Charged with failure to send their children to an approved school, the Amish insisted their own teachers with only an eighth-grade education are sufficient to instruct their children in the "simple farm life" of their religious sect. They also contended they do not have funds to pay for college-trained teachers required by state law.

Two other Amish men were arrested. One paid his fine, the other was hospitalized and could not appear for trial.
