By the intelligence from Florida which we publish to-day, it appears that the faithlessness of the Indians in the matter of the Treaty with Gen. Macomb, has at last been fully manifested. Taking advantage of the peace established by the Treaty, they fell upon Lt. Col. Harney and his party of about 30 men, in the night, and killed about half of them. Col. Harney, we are rejoiced to say, is among those that escaped. In the progress of the negociations relating to the Treaty, Col. H. several times hazarded his life among the Indians, being obliged by the circumstances of the case to seem to put confidence in them, although from his knowledge of their character, he must have been perfectly aware of the danger to which he was exposed. The Indians on their part pretended to regard him as a brother and friend; and behold here are the fruits of their friendship! After this signal act of treachery and murder, in which large numbers of them appear to have been actively concerned, both our government and people will doubtless be convinced that the time for temporising has gone by, and that vigorous measures must be adopted to bring the Indians to terms, by such means as we are able to command. None can regret this necessity more than we do. But it is not meet that we should suffer a few hundred vagabonds to murder and burn at their pleasure. If they will not have peace, they must have war, and enough of it. We don't know precisely what mode of warfare will be adopted against them,-but after what has occurred, we think it is not necessary to be very scrupulous about the mode. While we have exercised towards such of them as have been captured, the utmost forbearance and humanity, they have murdered, we believe, every individual who has fallen into their hands, and not only so, but have made a business of butchering defenceless families of women and children. These horribles must be put a stop to, and if it cannot be done in one way, it must in another.-Journal of Commerce.
