On an Evening Thunder Storm.
Just now bright Phoebus shone serenely bright,
And western clouds were tip'd with gems of gold;
When from the hemisphere he took his flight,
Each cloud the threat'ning voice of thunder told.
Hark! the loud thunder rolling o'er my head,
A gloomy aspect wear th' approaching clouds
That late with golden borders were bespread,
And darkness with her sable curtain shrouds.
Now louder still th' approaching thunder sounds.
And flashes of blue lightning catch mine eye;
With squally winds the atmosphere abounds,
Again sharp lightning blazes in the sky.
When disappear'd, the heavy thunders roar,
And dreadful omens o'er the mind prevail;
While from the heav'nly springs hard showers pour
And on the herbage falls destructive hail.
The streets just like a river's flowing tide,
With floods of water streaming o'er the plain;
The thunder now in distant clouds reside,
Once more serenity appears again.
Again an azure aspect we survey the sky,
Now shines through western clouds the pallid moon;
When streaks of lightning here have ceas'd to fly,
And calmness now all nature doth assume.
