St. Mark's Lyceum.

Under the efficient management of President Arthur W. Handy and his excellent corps of officers, St. Mark's Lyceum already seems to have awakened from that state of apathy to which it had succumbed and bids fair to outrival its former achievements. Thursday evening of last week began the series of talks by the pastor, Rev. H. A. Monroe, who will speak to the Lyceum one Thursday in each month on some popular topic, after which discussion upon the same is entered upon. He discussed "The Race Problem at the South," and from four well chosen hypotheses entirely confuted the arguments of Grady, Ingalls and others. His style and manner carried conviction, and the Lyceum adjourned much enlightened on the race question.

Sunday afternoon the Lyceum was packed to the doors, when President Handy read selections from the Scriptures. Prayer was then offered and the following program was rendered: Declaration, by ex-President J. M. Carter; solo, by Mrs. Mamie Ray; declamation, by Miss V. Scott; solo, by Miss Peterson; reading, by Mr. A. Winfred Monroe; quartet by members of the Lyceum; reading, by Miss Ida Lee of New Bedford; declamation, by Mr. E. B. Wright; solo, by Mr. A. Watson; selection by Miss Horton; oration, by Mr. F. Leslie Davis; doxology and benediction. The library which was presented to the Lyceum during President Carter's time and lay dormant during President Dandridge's career, will be revived, and with its 300 choice volumes bids fair to offer quite an advantage.
