College Faculty

Captain Joseph B. Swain, USN, will remain with the Industrial College of the Armed Forces as a member of the faculty following his graduation June 19th, 1952.

Captain Swain, as a member of the resident class, is completing a course of study in joint logistic-strategic planning and in the economic-military aspects of national security. The 10-months course opened last August.

Attendance at the Industrial College, which is on the highest level in the educational field in the Department of Defense, represents the capstone of an officer's military educational career.

The College, operating under direction of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, prepares selected senior Army, Navy (including Marine Corps) and Air Force officers for important command, staff, and planning assignments in the Department of Defense, and selected civilians for important industrial mobilization assignments in any government agency. The class numbers 117 officers, and 11 civilian officials from the Departments of State, Defense, Treasury, Interior, Commerce, and Labor.

Captain Swain was active in establishing the Fleet Sonar School at Key West from 1940-43, becoming its Commander. Later, 1949 to 1951, he was Commander of Destroyer Division 601 operating out of Key West in connection with work conducted by the operational Development Force and with the work of the Fleet Sonar School.

During Captain Swain's tour at the College, Mrs. Swain and son, Whitmel, have been making their home at 410 Caroline Street, Key West.

Captain Swain served aboard the USS Louisville from 1943 to 1946. He holds the Bronze Star Medal, Navy Commendation Ribbon, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 8 stars and Philippine Liberation Medal.
