Our town board of review have been at work on the assessment two or three days recently. This is a matter that needs close attention, since very great injustice is often done to individuals by unequal, and often, very unjust assessments. It matters little what the basis may be, if the whole is fairly equalized, yet the nearer the real value of the property is approached, the nearer even justice will be done. All this fault is not found without some cause, and the matter of taxation "is rarely right adjusted." The real sufferers, however, are not always found in the men who complain, and it frequently happens that the property of the whiners should be raised in value, and not diminished. It is the duty of equalizing boards, then, to look carefully to all, whether they present their grievances, or forbear. The rule should be, do justice to all, whether they complain or not.
