Miss Mildred Burke, a student in the University of Arkansas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Burke of this city, was selected by John Gilbert, famous movie star, as one of the six most beautiful girls in the University this year. There were 27 candidates for the honors. Miss Burke is a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences and is a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha national social sorority.
First place was given Miss Fannie Ruth Thomas of Waxahachie, Texas, a junior in the Arts and Sciences College and a member of the same sorority.
Other winners are Miss Ferne Watson of Fayetteville, junior in the College of Education, Delta Delta Delta; Miss Eileene Peterson of Hot Springs, sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, Pi Beta Phi; Miss Effie Aileen Metcalf, Batesville, junior in the College of Arts and Sciences Pi Beta Phi and Miss Rachael Wilson of Mangum, Oklahoma, sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, Delta Delta Delta.
Gilbert disapproved Anita Loos' famous statement concerning blondes and gentlemen by selecting four brunettes and only two blondes. Miss Watson is the only pronounced blonde but Miss Peterson is "on the fence."
