PROTESTANT CHURCH AUTHORITY.--Discussing the demands that in the new order of things the "fullest securities that the doctrines of the Church shall not be interfered with" shall be given, a Protestant writer in the Dublin Press strings together the following instances of unity of doctrine. He calls attention to the fact that when the clergy had the exclusive care of the formularies of the Church they were unable or unwilling to prevent or to deprive Bishops and learned doctors from teaching perverse doctrine:
1. Dr. South, who was offered a Bishopric, taught flat Sabellianism; and Dr. Sherlock (Dean of St. Paul's), and our learned Dr. Bingham, were condemned of Tritheism by Oxford.
2. The great Bishop Jer. Taylor denied original sin and death by Adam's fall, and joked about the "cutting of Cain's navel," and grew serious about the devil cohabiting with witches.
3. Bishop Marsh translated and published a German work which dispensed with the inspiration of the New Testament, and called it an "unnecessary hypothesis," and the Bishop termed the Messianic adaptations in the New Testament a "pious fraud."
4. Archbishop Whately denied a Trinity of three distinct persons.
5. Dr. Arnold denied the inspiration, authenticity and date of the Book of Daniel the Prophet, and he disbelieved the Athanasian Creed.
6. A dignitary of the Church, not Colenso, denies "all divine and infinite attributes and powers" to our Saviour, and "all capacity for exercising them."
7. A celebrated F. T. C. D. denies the Vicarious suffering of Christ.
8. Another F. T. C. D. denies the eternal punishment of the lost.
9. Bishop Thirlwall translated and published a German work which calls St. Luke's account of the birth of Christ "a pleasing little apocryphal poem," which was "treated as history by a mistake."
