WORTHY OF IMITATION.

It has been a matter of regret that Illinois, for the number of its inhabitants and fertility of its soil, has exported less than any other state in the Union. This was in some measure owing to the want of capital, or that riches is so equally distributed, that few of the citizens would think it prudent to risk a boat load of produce on their own footing. It is for the honor of Jackson county that they have set the example of forming an Exporting and Importing Company, where the citizens have bound themselves by certain articles into an association for the purpose of taking their produce to Orleans.

The advantages to be expected from this infant establishment are incalculable. At present, among the inhabitants, there are no inducements to industry, for want of a market for their produce.--The farmer thinks it unnecessary to plant more grain than he can dispose of at home; thus part of his time passes off in a state of inactive languor; but once point out to him a market where he may have a sure sale for his produce, and every nerve is exerted in the cause of industry.

It is to be hoped that the people generally will appreciate the advantages of the Company, and that other counties may follow the example. Combinations are frequently formed for the purpose of running horses, fighting chickens, &c. &c. Why not encourage one which has a more commendable object in view the exporting our produce, and encouraging the industry of our citizens?
