Pleased With Impressions Created at the Hearing in Washington.
Mayor Mitchel was enthusiastic to-day over the impressions he gathered before the Rivers and Harbors Committee of Congress in Washington yesterday. The Mayor pleaded in favor of an appropriation for the betterment of New York Harbor. He said the extension northward of the Ambrose Channel and the dredging of the East River and elimination of the reefs that now imperil navigation are parts of the most vital problems confronting the city. He said he was very hopeful that an initial appropriation of $600,000 to begin the work will soon be made. The Mayor explained the needs of New York's river improvements so fully to the members of Congress, he said, that in a short time it is expected a sub-committee of the Rivers and Harbors Committee will visit this city to go over the ground. It will be explained that the elimination of the reefs off Coenties Slip must be accomplished immediately so that the new Whitehall-Montague street tunnel can be bored.
