SHERIFF FRAZIER "ON THE JOB"

Former Smyrnian With His Revolver,
Forces Four Prisoners Into Another
Cell to Prevent Kent Jail Break

With a drawn revolver, Sheriff Edgar Frazier late Friday night foiled an attempt made by four men to break out of the Kent county jail after they had destroyed much of the jail property. Sheriff Frazier is a native of the Smyrna-Kenton community and his act of bravery has given his friends cause to congratulate him. The prisoners in the "jail break" gang, all Wilmingtonians, had been taken into custody as witnesses with an alleged hit-run driver. The men were arrested shortly before 10 o'clock by Private Lamb, of the State Highway Police, on a description furnished by telephone by a boy who had been riding along the State Road on a motorcycle and said he saw the car strike a negro south of Odessa and continue on. Eight Wilmington men were in the car and gave their names as Anthony J. Kozlowski, of 801 Wright street; W. C. Maliszewski, of 129 Stroud street; Theodore E. Pajerowski, of 224 Stroud street; James Frank Krakus, of 204 Lower Oak street; William Krammpa, of 236 Stroud street; Stanley Kazjarwski, of 202 Lower Oak street, and J. Mitchell, of 822 Anchorage street. The men were locked in two cells in the lower part of the jail, and after being left by Sheriff Frazier and Private Lamb, broke the banister on the stairway leading to the main floor, and with it broke the lock on their cell. After getting out, they are said to have torn up a section of the floor, broke several windows, and did other damage to the jail in an effort to get out. The noise attracted the attention of Sheriff Frazier, who placed them in another cell after he had quieted them with a drawn revolver. Charges of destroying jail property were lodged against Kozlowski, Maliszewski, Pajerowski and Krakus, and they were released under $500 bail each pending a hearing. Kozlowski was arraigned before Magistrate Stevens, of Middletown, and held under $1000 bail for the New Castle County Court of General Sessions on a charge of failing to stop after an accident. Samuel Lewis, of Odessa, the negro he is alleged to have run down is in the Delaware Hospital suffering from injuries to the head and body.
