Bunker Hill Monument.

Since the death of his late Excellency Governor Brooks, who was President of the Bunker Hill Monument Association, the Hon. Daniel Webster has been elected as his successor.

No plan has yet been determined upon as to the form of the Monument; the committee on that subject are divided in opinion.

Of the numerous plans sent to the association by different artists, there are about sixteen elevations of columns, an obelisk but no pyramids.

The objection to a column with a figure upon it is, that at the elevation of 220 feet, the design of the artist cannot be ascertained, since neither the feature nor the form of a statue at that height can be distinguished.

Besides a column standing by itself, on the ground, is opposed to the architectural and supposition that such structures are intended to support weight. They are to be viewed as forming part of a building, and not as separate and distinct objects.

Those who maintain these opinions, prefer a simple geometrical form like an obelisk or a pyramid.

Of the elevation of columns we have seen that which has the most simple grandeur, is a fluted Doric column without a base, rising from the ground and surmounted by the common capital.

Trajan's column, also possesses great beauty of proportion.

The question will be determined in the course of a few days.

The Corner Stone of the Monument will be laid on the 17th of June, the 50th Anniversary of the Battle, by the President of the Association assisted by Gen. La Fayette and the M. W. Grand Master of the Freemasons.

An oration by Mr. Webster will be delivered on the occasion, after which there will be a dinner upon the ground, calculated for several thousand persons.
