HANOVER, AUG. 28.
Commencement at Dartmouth College.
Last Wednesday was the anniversary Commencement at Dartmouth College. At eleven o'clock A. M. the President, Board of Trustees, Officers of College, Gentlemen of Public education and character, candidates for the first and second degrees, and Members of the Institution, walked in procession to the Meeting House. After prayer by the President, and appropriate music, the exercises performed were—A salutatory Oration in Latin, by Samuel Whitmore—A Dissertation in English on Fire, by Josiah Moulton—A Dispute on the question, "Does the world tend naturally to dissolution?" by Augustus Alden and Roswell Willard—An Oration on the African Slave Trade, by A. Alden—A philosophic Oration on Vegetation, by Elisha Rockwood—A Poem, by Elisha Hammond—A Greek Oration on the happy effects of science, by Amos Twitchell.
The degree of Bachelor of Arts was then conferred on Augustus Alden, Amos J. Cook, John R. Cutting, Nathaniel Dalton, Samuel Eastman, Brown Emerson, Moses M. Fisk, John Frink, Jacob Gillet, Elisha Hammond, Nathaniel Huse, Josiah Moulton, Joseph Mulliken, Joseph Paine, Joseph Richardson, Elisha Rockwood, Luther Stone, Amos Twitchell, Samuel Walker, Samuel Whitmore, Roswell Willard, and Nathan Wood.
The degree of Bachelor in Medicine was conferred on Daniel Goodrich, Cyrus Perkins, and J. Hubbard Sparhawk.
The degree of Master of Arts was conferred on Mark Newman, Samuel Burnham, and Rev. Ruben Emerson—also on Joseph Aiken, Samuel Bradley, William Briggs, John H. Crane, Alexander Dustin, Levi Jackson, William Rolfe, Moses Sawyer, Roswell Shirtliff, and Samuel Whiting.—
The Rev. Joseph Bowman, and Thomas Thompson, Esq. Masters of Arts at Harvard College, were admitted to the same; and an honorary degree of Master of Arts was conferred on the Hon. Arthur Livermore.
The degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred on Rufus King, Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of London, from the U. States: and on John Davis Judge of the District Court of Massachusetts. Then followed the Valedictory Oration, by Samuel Walker. A piece of music was performed; and the exercises were closed with prayer by the President.
The performances displayed such literary taste and laudable improvement, as rendered them highly satisfactory to a numerous and polite audience.
SOCIETIES.
On Monday last, at 11 o'clock, an Oration historically descriptive of harmony and song, was pronounced before the Musical Society, by Amos J. Cook. At 4 o'clock P. M. before the Social Friends, an Oration on the adaptation of natural objects to each other, by Joseph Richardson.
On Tuesday, half past 9 o'clock A. M. before the Literary Adelphi, an oration on the effects of Infidelity, by Elisha Hammond. At 11 o'clock A. M. before the Phi Beta Kappa, an Oration on the defects of modern Philosophy, by the Rev. Asa McFarland; and at 2 o'clock, before the United Fraternity, an Oration on the fine Arts, by Samuel Walker.
The performances merited applause: and we are happy to observe, that the most perfect order has prevailed through the week.
