Chinese Stoicism Will Defeat Japs, Speaker Declares Artillery Officer Here Recounts Experiences In Shanghai Region

"The stoicism of the Chinese will see them through." declared Lt. Col. R. L. Crist, principal speaker at the last general meeting of the Associated Chambers of Commerce Friday night in Calexico.

Crist, who replaced Congressman-Elect John Phillips at the speaker's table when the former state senator from California was unable to be present, told of his activities in the Marine corps.

He was in charge of American Marines in the Shanghai area when the Japanese attacked the city in 1932. Crist described the brutal tactics of the Nipponese soldiers and berated them as fighters.

RUN FROM FIRECRACKERS
"When a bunch of firecrackers exploded at a Chinese wedding the mighty soldiers of Japan ran like scared rabbits." Crist said.

The calmness and ability to take much punishment of the Chinese soldiers will finally give them victory, Crist declared.

The fact that Crist was shadowed constantly while in Kobe on his way home to the United States in 1934 gave evidence that the Japs anticipated the present war for a long time.

MEETINGS ABANDONED
The young-appearing lieutenant colonel is now attached to an artillery battalion at Camp Dunlap, north of Niland.

At the executive session of the chamber meeting it was decided to abandon the general meetings and to confine gatherings to executive sessions because of impending fuel rationing.

Calipatria is scheduled to hold the next meeting sometime after Christmas but may withdraw in favor of El Centro.
