several severe shocks of an Earthquake were felt there which destroyed part of the City, and the Inhabitants were buried in the ruins; that those who remained alive escaped to the Fields, and pitched tents to preserve them from the inclemency of the weather, which was at that time very rainy. At the time it happened the River Maritza rose considerably, and the effects of the Earthquake were perceived many leagues out at sea, and even as far as Philippoli.
