Full Text

American Sculpture. The Connecticut Journal states that Mr Hezekiah Augur, of New Haven, Conn. (whose fine bust of Apollo, placed in the Boston Athenaeum, we noticed some time ago) has a group under his chisel, which the editor predicts will surpass any thing he has yet completed. The Sappho of this self-taught artist, has been much admired, and it is said that several other productions of his, are not less entitled to praise. He is the first American who has ventured to devote himself exclusively to sculpture. Now is the time to determine whether there is taste enough in the country to encourage a meritorious and promising artist in this department of the fine arts.
