The following paragraphs occur in a letter published in the Philadelphia Gazette of Saturday last, said to be from a gentleman in London, and dated 30th April.
The information contained therein, is of the greatest importance to this Country, and is said to come from an authentic source.
What particularly excited my attention is the apparent absurdity of saying that the British government shews a good disposition to conciliate, when at the same moment it is said we may expect that our vessels will be carried into British ports and their cargoes paid for at a rate to be established by the British.
Quid Nunc.
The paragraphs alluded to.
"Americans, Danes and Swedes must all expect to be brought into British ports, and to be paid for their cargoes in the way, and according to a rate to be established here. The neutrals who may feel the effects of this regulation, may not suffer in point of interest as individuals—but to the national flag, it will be an indignity hard to be borne.
" The business of claims goes on as well as the nature of the proceeding will admit.
" The government shew a good disposition at present to conciliate, and to forget past misunderstandings. I hope events may keep them in this way of thinking— but had not our government interfered— had it suffered each individual to obtain justice in what manner he could, I fear our citizens would have fared but ill— we are treated with far more respect than any other neutral power."
