It's time to call the dog and go
Happy hunting in the morn
Like to get the boy and say
Let the chores all done today
An' as soon as breakfast's done
We'll go out and have some fun
The thing we've got to do
is to start a rabbit anew
It came to me today as though
The rain was showin' in the snow
An' round the brush pile there
Seems to me I make a pair
I go out ready for the pot.
An' I think they should be quit
After we'll take the trail
After Mr. Cottontail
Those like that don't come now and then
All we have been good for men
Therefore ought to find
This sort o' clears his mind
And forgot his daily chores
Just by trampin' out o' doors
An' a good old rabbit chase
Brings the color to your face
There is something in the air
Seems to blow away all care.
An' the bayin' of a dog
Or the timber takes you back
Headin' towards some fallen log
You along like'n dreary track
An' you're feelin' so young and strong
An' the boy who went along
With me 'round a fire all day
Near would turn my hair to gray.
But while roastin' rabbits out
I'm so youngest kid about
As when I go hunt at night
I've a youngster's appetite
Youth is mine, when I can go
Rabbit hunting in the snow
