IN SENATE, WEDNESDAY, MAY 26.
On motion of Mr. Lloyd of Mass. the rule was rescinded which provides that no bill shall receive its third reading before 12 o'clock.
Forty-seven bills, received at times from the other House, were read a third time each, and passed. Those of a general nature were :—The bill for " the relief of certain distillers;" the bill " making appropriations to carry into effect certain treaties ;" the bill making appropriations for the Military service of the U. S. for 1824; the bill " concerning wrecks on the coast of Florida :" and the bill " authorizing an appropriation for the Library of Congress."
Among the local bills, was one " to allow salaries to the collectors of the ports of Nantucket and Pensacola."
There being no further legislative business on the table, the Senate, on motion of Mr. Holmes of Me. proceeded to the consideration of Executive business.
Adjourned to to-morrow.
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 26.
The House concurred with the Senate in the amendments to the supplementary act for incorporating the city of Washington.
Several of the standing committees were discharged from the consideration of petitions referred to them ; and several bills were laid on the table.
Mr. M'Duffie offered the following resolution :
Resolved, That the President of the United States be requested to avail himself of all the means in his power, to ascertain whether any farther evidence can be obtained in relation to the claim of the heirs of Caron de Beaumarchais ; and that, if any such evidence shall be obtained, that he communicate the same to this House, at an early period of the next session.
[A debate ensued on this motion, which was supported by the mover, with a wish to show the French Government that this country is disposed to do justice in the case ; and was opposed by Messr. Forsyth, Sharpe and Livermore, as unnecessary, unusual, and as holding out false hopes to the claimant, that the House might recognize her claim—which had better be prevented.]
The resolution was rejected.
French Spoilations.—The House sustained a resolution offered by Mr. Cambrelleng, calling for information with respect to the amount of French Spoliations for the last 30 years. Also a resolution calling on the President for the correspondence with the French Government with respect to injuries done to the property of American citizens by subjects of France.
The Arkansas Boundary extension limits, passed. Yeas 70. Nays 58.
The House then concurred in the Senate's amendments to the 1825 Military Appropriation bill; and the bill for the employment of additional Clerks, &c. in the several departments.
Memorial of Mr. Edwards.—The House agreed (Ayes 74) to a resolution to direct the Committee of Investigation, on the memorial of Ninian Edwards, to sit during the recess, and to file their report in the Clerk's office, and that the Clerk cause the final report to be printed, and transmitted to each member of the House.
During this discussion, a motion to direct a copy of the Committee's report, &c. to be transmitted to the President, it was rejected.
Evening Sitting.—Several Bills were passed, among them the bill to amend the Naturalization Laws. Both Houses continued together to a late hour : as this was the last day on which Legislative business could be transacted. All subjects not then acted upon, are laid over to the next session. Adjourned.
