The Intelligencer is occupied to-day by news items and the re-publication of the late able speech of Mr. Chandler against the Nebraska bill.
The Union publishes the reply of ex-Governor Steele to Major Ripley's rejoinder upon the subject of the superintendency of public works. The editor says that this is to be the last of the controversy in his columns, the contestants having become too personal for the Union, &c. The Union further describes how the Secretary of the Treasury has disbursed the life-boat fund entrusted to him. "Fair Play" an "intelligent Cuban," as the editor says, occupies two columns of the Union with an essay on the Black Warrior case.
The Sentinel rejoices over Mr. Fillmore's seeming conversion to Fillibusterism, as exemplified in his Vicksburg speech, wherein it is reported that- "In his speech at Vicksburg he spoke of that portion of the Mississippi valley being the centre of the Republic; not, indeed, the Republic with its present limits; for Canada, said he, with a glow of feeling and a kindling of the eye, 'is knocking for admittance, and Mexico, would be glad to come in; and, without saying whether it would be right or wrong, we stand with open arms to receive them, for it is the manifest destiny of this Government to embrace the whole North American Continent.' This is quite different from the letter he wrote while President, indicating hostility to the acquisition of Cuba."
