The Exodus from Russia.
It will be seen by an article which we copy from the Levant Herald that good authorities estimate at over a million the number of Russian Jews who are looking to Syria as a possible asylum for persecuted Israel. It is believed at Constantinople that the deliberate, if not openly avowed, policy of the Russian Government is to crowd the Jews out of the empire. If that is true, the question of the establishment elsewhere of this industrious and intelligent population becomes one of the most momentous now before the world. A few of the exiles are now arriving at Castle Garden. In the event of a general exodus, however, it is hardly probable that more than a comparatively insignificant portion would reach our shores. The obstacle to the colonization of the waste places of Syria and Mesopotamia by the Russian Jews is in the present attitude of the Turkish Government. But if considerations of sound political economy should prevail with the Sultan's Government, the gates to Asia Minor would be thrown wide open to a race which always carries thrift, and generally carries prosperity, where it goes.
