The Independence Fire Company wants recognition. It wants to be one of the regular fire fighters. Justice of the Peace Francis S. Bradley, who is an enthusiastic member of the Independence Fire Company, last evening presented to City Council a strong petition in favor of locating a fire company in the lower end of the Ninth ward.
The Independence Company is understood to be willing to make a concession for the purpose of ascertaining if the others who are interested in Ninth ward companies are willing to be real volunteer firemen. It is generally admitted that City Council would be willing to grant an appropriation of $3,000 a year to one company in the Ninth ward.
The proposition of the Independence Company is that the Council recognize all three of the Ninth ward companies upon the condition that they agree to accept $1,000 each year for ten years. This would be enough to maintain the companies for work in their own immediate sections and would cost the city no more than for one company. The Independence Company is willing to enter into such an agreement.
It is not likely that Council will agree to this proposition. The members hold that one company in the Ninth ward is enough, and are at present unwilling to recognize more than one.
The new Company has responded and did excellent work at fires.
