DIPLOMATIC APPOINTMENTS.

As other Whig Journals have seen fit to announce the Diplomatic nominations of President Tyler in advance of their confirmation by the Senate, there can no longer be a reason for withholding them. It is understood that on Friday last the President transmitted to the Senate the following nominations.

Edward Everett, Minister Plenipo. to England.

C. S. Todd, of Ohio, Russia.

Daniel Jenifer, of Md. Austria.

George W. Hopkins, of Tenn. Charge Portugal.

D. A. Varnum, of Georgia, Sardinia.

John S. Pendleton, of Virginia, Chili.

Mr. Everett is well known to the country as long an able and prominent Whig Member of Congress from Massachusetts, and Governor of that State in 1837 and 38. He was rooted out by the 'Striped Pig' in 1839; Morton receiving a majority of one—Gov. Everett went abroad for his health early in 1840, and has not yet returned; so that this appointment, at least, cannot be stigmatized as a reward for party services. We believe none will doubt the eminent fitness of Gov. E. for the important station he has been called to fill.

Col. Todd was a gallant soldier in the last war with Great Britain, an aid of Gen. Harrison at the battle of the Thames, and rose by good conduct to be Inspector General of the U. States. He resigned on the reduction of the Army, and retired to a farm in Kentucky, which he left in 1840 to fight the battle of his old beloved commander, as Editor of the Cincinnati Republican. He was one of the most intimate and valued friends of the deceased President.

Hon. Daniel Jenifer was for several years a leading Whig member of Congress from the Western Shore District of Maryland, but declined a re-election this year. He is selected for the Austrian Embassy on account of his intimate knowledge of and connection with the Tobacco Planting interest, which is deeply interested in a modification of the enormous impost on Tobacco now exacted by Austria. The Planters have with great unanimity solicited his appointment, and the President has acceded to their wishes.

The public, who know how recklessly and with what indecent haste most of the subsisting Diplomatic appointments were swept aside when Jacksonism came into power, will not fail to remark the different spectacle now presented. Nearly five months have elapsed since the Whig Administration came into power, and not one Embassador or Charge has yet been recalled. Mr. Stevenson has asked to be superseded at London; Mr. Cambreleng long since abandoned Russia and is amusing himself in Switzerland or the South of Europe; Mr. Muhlenburg of his own accord came home from Austria several months ago.
