Whereas the Congress by a joint resolution approved August 11, 1945, has designated the first week in October each year as National Employ the physically Handicapped Week.
Whereas the continued employment of these workers will prove beneficial not only to them but also to employers and society as a whole. At the present time there are a total of 36 handicapped persons registered for work in the Lincolnton office of the Employment Security Commission, Manager Paul Lawing reports.
This is possibly a small percentage of the handicapped people throughout Lincoln County, who are handicapped and not registered for work in our office.
National Employ the Physically Handicap week will be observed October 2-8, 1955. The local committee consists of the following persons: A. L. Goldsmith, Chairman; Dr. Boyce P. Griggs, Stern Warlick.
It is the desire of this Committee to see all handicapped persons placed on productive jobs somewhere in our community. If you are an employer and can use someone whose ability not disability counts then call the local Employment Security Office at phone RE 5-2252, and let someone discuss your job qualifications with the qualifications of these handicapped persons.
A citizen of our state, Judge Sam Cathey of Asheville, N. C. was selected to receive the 1955 President's Trophy for the "Handicapped Man of the Year". Although blind Judge Cathey was honored for a lifetime of service to the blind of his state and the nation.
"Just remember," Mr. Lawing said. "it is the desire of this committee to assist in securing employment for these handicapped persons and statistics have been proven handicaps to be more dependable, reliable, productive and have less hours lost due to sickness than persons who are not handicapped."
